Antique Victorian / Edwardian Compact

Description

This is an Antique Victorian or Edwardian Compact.

The base of the oval compact is about 3" x 2 3/8" x 3/4" tall.
The compact weighs 68.6 grams and it has a very heavy feel.  It appears to me to be solid brass.
It has a mirror in the lid, and the original puff.

Condition:
As found there are a number of condition issues.  There is light paint wear, slight scratching, and color variation on the paint on top.  There is an ornate design on the top.  It can be seen only on close inspection.  This leads me to believe that this may have original been a constrasting color.  I guess another possibility in that that design was originally on unpainted brass, and that it was painted black later, I do not know if that was the case or not.
On the bottom, there is some heavier paint loss along one edge, and additional you can see that the black paint on the left side in the bottom photo is shinier that the matte black paint on the rest of the piece.  Therefore it seems to me that this piece might have been repainted.
As seen an irregularly shaped area of the backing on the mirror on the left side seems to have been compromised as seen.
The lid closes securely.
